Experiencing no cooling in the hot summer when your air conditioning isn’t working is less than an ideal situation. If you find yourself in a similar situation, there are 5 steps to review that might save you from having to pay for a service call.

What to Do When Your Central Air Isn’t Working

There are 5 key things to look for when your central air conditioning isn’t working. In this video, Brian explains what to look for.

The Top 5 Things to Look for When You Experience No Cooling

  1. Check that your a/c disconnect is on.
  2. Make sure your cover is removed from your air conditioner.
  3. Check for any grass clippings or debris on the outside unit.
  4. Make sure your furnace filter is clean.
  5. Check for ice buildup on the indoor and outdoor unit.
  6. Bonus tip- make sure your HRV is on the summer setting.

In the following videos, we will walk you through each step to determine what might be causing your a/c to not work.

Make sure your A/C cover is removed

Although this sounds like common sense, if you haven’t used your air conditioner since last season, it’s normal to forget to remove the cover!

Check for any debris on the outdoor unit

Is there grass clippings, dirt, or other debris covering the outdoor air conditioning unit?

Check your furnace filter

One thing that you might not think to check because it’s part of your furnace, is the filter. Check to make sure your furnace filter is clean and free of debris.

Look for ice buildup

If you are still experiencing no cooling from your central air conditioner, check both the indoor and outdoor unit for signs of freezing. In this video, Brian shows you where to look for ice buildup on your a/c.

Do you have an HRV?

Bonus tip! If you have an HRV, one last thing to look for before calling for service is to make sure your HRV is turned to the summer setting.
